Italian man dies from falling tree branch in Pattaya

An 91-year-old Italian national died after a broken tree branch fell on his head while he was walking on the sidewalk on Pattaya beach road yesterday.

The incident happened in front of Jomthien Garden Resort at 6.30 pm near Soi 8 on the sidewalk of the beach road.

The victim was identified as Mr Giacomo Smedile.

Pattaya police arriving at the scene with rescuers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasatarn charity foundation said the tourist died at the scene.

Nearby his body with serious head injury were two broken tree branches of three metres in length and 10 centimeters in diameter.

Inquiry of his 49-year-old Thai wife revealed that they were walking back to their rented apartment room on Soi 8 when her Italian husband heard the sound of broken tree branches.

He pushed her off the path of the falling branches safely, but unfortunately he was hit on the head by a branch.

Beach vendors said Pattaya City workers came constantly to cut the rotting tree branches.

However this tropical almond tree has not yet been cut, adding that there was no wind during the time of incident.

Pattaya police were coordinating with the Italian Embassy to inform the victim's relatives.
