Japanese Government Funds Dormitory Construction for Thai Schoolgirls

Bangkok: The Japanese government is extending its support to Thailand through a financial contribution of 3,541,500 baht. This funding is directed towards "The Project for the Construction of Female Dormitory at Secondary School in Tak Province," facilitated by the Grant Aid for Grassroots Human Security (GGP) program.

According to Thai News Agency, the Embassy of Japan in Thailand announced that the handover ceremony for this project took place on February 18, 2026, at Tha Song Yang Wittayakom School in Tak Province. The event was attended by notable figures including Mr. Preeda Fungtrakulchai, District Chief of Tha Song Yang; Dr. Banjongsek Sapsopa, Director of the C.C.F. Foundation for Children and Youth under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn; Mr. Sutin Khamnan, Principal of Tha Song Yang Wittayakom School; and Mr. Kajiwara Toru, Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs, Embassy of Japan in Thailand.

Tha Song Yang Wittayakom School, the only government-run secondary school in the district, serves 1,100 students, predominantly of Karen ethnicity. Many students face dangerous commutes due to landslides, unpaved roads, and poverty. The lack of adequate dormitory facilities poses significant challenges, as five out of seven girls' dormitories are severely overcrowded. The dormitories, aged 27 years, face structural issues such as rainwater seepage, cracked pillars, and leaking roofs, leaving parents concerned about safety and hindering educational access.

The Japanese government's funding aims to address these challenges by demolishing an old dormitory and constructing a new one for 100 students. This initiative will increase the dormitory's capacity from 180 to 220 female students, alleviating overcrowding and enhancing educational stability. The Japanese government remains committed to supporting human security projects through the GGP program.
