Bangkok: The Minister of Justice conducted a surprise raid at the Bangkok Remand Prison, calling for a thorough investigation into officials accused of granting privileges to Chinese inmates. A Chinese woman was reportedly seen entering a private area within the prison, deliberately timing her visits to avoid being seen by relatives of other inmates.
According to Thai News Agency, Justice Minister Pol. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat, accompanied by senior officials from the Department of Corrections and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), visited the prison after discovering officials were allegedly providing unauthorized benefits to Chinese inmates. The investigation revealed that two Chinese women were improperly accessing a reception room, prompting preparations to escalate the matter as a special case.
Police Lieutenant General Rutthapol Naowarat, alongside ministry executives and other key officials, visited the site to gather details and oversee the investigation. Initial steps by the DSI involve setting up a special case, reflecting the severity of the allegations.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Prawut Wongsinil, Director-General of the Department of Corrections, detailed that he was informed about the misconduct shortly after assuming his role in October 2015. After gathering evidence, it was found that prison administrators were complicit in activities breaching corrections regulations. The investigation indicated potential involvement of prostitution, with Chinese women found in compromising positions within the prison.
Despite denials from the women, evidence such as condoms and tissue papers with traces of semen suggests otherwise. These findings will be further examined by forensic experts. The reception area, intended for official purposes, was misused, raising questions about oversight and compliance within the prison.
The investigation continues to unravel, with significant findings such as the presence of prohibited items like tobacco and alcohol. Allegations suggest that prison staff were complicit, facilitating the entry of Chinese women through official channels, raising concerns about internal corruption.
