Bangkok: Khaosan Road is bustling with activity as 600 police officers are deployed to ensure security. Checkpoints have been set up, and one-way streets have been implemented to reduce congestion in the area. At 12:00 PM, Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Deepo, Deputy Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Police, along with other high-ranking officials, led the security operation.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Rongsop, the Royal Thai Police Spokesperson, emphasized the commitment to tourist safety during the Songkran festival. Following the policy of Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet, the Royal Thai Police Chief, specific attention is being given to areas like Khao San Road, where significant gatherings occur. A forward operations center is being established at Chana Songkhram Police Station, and technology is being leveraged for management. Four checkpoints have been strategically set up to maintain order and safety.
Last year's Songkran saw approximately 100,000 tourists on Khao San Road, with similar numbers expected this year. The Bangkok Metropolitan Police have deployed 600 officers, implementing walk-through checkpoints to prevent entry of weapons and illegal items. EOD officers are actively involved in pre-event safety measures. Additionally, 80 CCTV cameras and drones are operational for surveillance, and loudspeakers are installed for public announcements. Traffic in the area will be restricted from 12:00 PM to midnight.
Current enforcement policies highlight stricter adherence to traffic regulations. Over the past three days, 223,834 offenders have been arrested, primarily for drunk driving and speeding. These efforts have resulted in fewer accidents and fatalities compared to the previous year. With full-scale water festivities commencing, authorities are enforcing regulations on attire and possession of illegal items.
