Khon Kaen Zoo Celebrates Halloween with Skull-Shaped Pumpkins for Anteaters

Khon Kaen:Halloween festivities took a unique turn at Khon Kaen Zoo, where giant anteaters were treated to a special menu served in skull-shaped pumpkins. The zoo also created a stylish photo spot to attract visitors keen on social media check-ins.

According to Thai News Agency, the zoo's lively atmosphere featured staff dressed in costumes depicting local Isaan spirits and ghosts. These included representations of guardian spirits of the forest and mountains, as well as nymphs, aligning with local beliefs in sacred entities that protect nature. This cultural display was intended to link local traditions with conservation education.

Officials at the zoo prepared a Halloween-themed menu for the giant anteaters, using carved pumpkins shaped like skulls. The pumpkins were filled with the anteaters' favorite foods, such as boiled eggs, bananas, and termites. These specially prepared meals were given to two giant anteaters "Nu Lek," a female received from Khao Kheow Open Zoo in 2018, and another born at Khon Kaen Zoo in 2016. Both anteaters, now about six months old, benefited from the enrichment activity, which aimed to encourage natural foraging behaviors.

The zoo's Halloween celebrations also included themed photo spots for tourists, enhancing their experience with the presence of angels, forest spirits, and nymphs during animal shows. This festive atmosphere provided a unique and engaging experience for visitors, setting it apart from typical zoo visits.
