Moscow: North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have exchanged congratulatory messages to bolster their bilateral relations on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of Korean Liberation Day from Japanese rule. The leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing cooperation in all areas, particularly in regional security and stability.
According to Thai News Agency, North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, reported that Kim Jong-un expressed pride in the evolving relationship between the two nations. He emphasized that their friendship, which dates back to a shared history of struggle since World War II, continues to progress. Kim also conveyed confidence in Russia's ability to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Putin's congratulatory message highlighted active cooperation between Russia and North Korea, pointing out that their bilateral relations have reached an unprecedented level of strategic partnership. Kim Jong-un responded by emphasizing strategic and tactical cooperation to jointly confront threats and provocations, often referring to the United States and its allies.
KCNA further reported that the Russian warship Pallada made a friendly visit to Wonsan to commemorate the anniversary, signaling the deepening ties between the nations.
The relationship has strengthened significantly since North Korea began supporting Russia in the Ukrainian war by providing troops and equipment. Analysts suggest this is Pyongyang's largest military involvement since the 1950s, with Russia reciprocating through financial assistance, military technology, and resources like food and energy. This development has raised concerns among Western nations, South Korea, and Ukraine, who view North Korea's military cooperation with Russia as a significant escalation, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
