Bangkok: His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen watched the premiere of the Khon performance by the Support Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, titled “Satya Pali” in the Ramakien.
According to Thai News Agency, the event took place at the Main Auditorium of the Thailand Cultural Centre, where the King and Queen were greeted by performers and dignitaries, including Mr. Thanawapat Tokratok and Mr. Rapee Sittichai, who portrayed key roles in the performance. Air Chief Marshal Sathitpong Sukwimol was also present to acknowledge the support of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in promoting the Khon performance, emphasizing its cultural significance.
The Khon performance, “Satya Pali,” is a traditional Thai masked dance-drama that recounts the story of Phaya Pali, the monkey king, who faces consequences for breaking a promise. The narrative underscores themes of gratitude, loyalty, and duty, serving as an allegory for the virtues expected of those who serve the nation.
The royal family’s support for Khon performances has been pivotal in preserving this cultural heritage. This dedication was recognized by UNESCO, which registered Khon as a “Representative Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2018, highlighting its importance in the global cultural landscape.
