Lampang: The director of the Lampang Buddhist Office has taken legal action against an entertainment venue for allegedly insulting Buddhism. This comes after a singer, dressed as a monk, performed a song that mocked "Sami Choti," prompting local authorities to consider additional charges.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred on September 12th, 2026, at a venue in Lampang province. The performance featured a singer impersonating a monk, complete with large-scale props, and delivering a song titled "Om Phra Ma Phut" (Swearing by a Monk). The act, which drew both cheers and jeers from the audience, was intended to mimic the controversial monk Sami Choti. A video of the performance was later posted on the venue's Facebook page, with a provocative caption, before being removed the following day.

In response, Mr. Kanungkit Phromnuchanon, Director of the Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism, lodged a formal complaint at the Lampang City Police Station. He accused the individuals and establishment involved of insulting religion and impersonating a monk, which are criminal offenses under Sections 206 and 208 of the Criminal Code, respectively. Mr. Phromnuchanon urged Buddhists to uphold and promote their faith, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the teachings of the Buddha rather than on individuals.

Authorities are now preparing to press additional charges against the venue, including operating an illegal establishment, hosting obscene performances, and violating the Computer Crime Act by distributing obscene material online. Another venue in Koh Kha District is also under scrutiny for a similar performance, which led to a public outcry and warnings of potential legal repercussions.

The Lampang Buddhist Office has since issued a statement appealing to entertainment venues, artists, and the public to refrain from using religious symbols in a disrespectful manner. They emphasized the need for collective efforts to protect and sustain Buddhism within Thai society.
