Life Imprisonment for “Am Cyanide” Who Poisoned “Captain Nui”

Bangkok: The Criminal Court sentenced "Am Cyanide" to death for poisoning and killing "Captain Nui," but due to her cooperation in the case, the sentence was reduced by one-third, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence.

According to Thai News Agency, the Criminal Court was scheduled to read its verdict in the case where the Public Prosecutor's Office, Special Criminal Division 9, filed charges against Ms. Sararat, or "Am Cyanide," for premeditated murder. The charges stem from poisoning the food and drinks of Police Lieutenant Kanda Torai, or "Captain Nui," a former police officer from the Sai Yok Police Station in Kanchanaburi, in 2022. "Am" denies the charges and intends to fight the case in court.

The court took approximately 15 minutes to read the verdict. After reviewing the evidence, it was determined that "Am" was the last person to have a meal with the deceased. Although there was no eyewitness testimony that "Am" poisoned the victim, she possessed cyanide and had previously been prosecuted in 14 cases of poisoning. This led the court to believe that "Am" acted similarly in the other cases by putting poison in the victim's food. This aligns with the expert testimony, which indicated the presence of cyanide in the victim's body. The prosecution's witnesses were considered credible and did not intend to falsely incriminate or falsely accuse "Am." Furthermore, there were inconsistencies and suspicious details in "Am's" testimony.

Based on the circumstances, the court sentenced Am to death, but due to her providing some useful testimony in the case, the sentence was reduced by one-third, resulting in a life sentence to be served consecutively with her previous sentence.

Following the court's decision, Patch, or Ms. Thannicha Eaksuwanrat, Am's lawyer, told reporters that she accepts the court's verdict. Regarding the fraud charge that the public prosecutor filed alongside this case, the court dismissed it because the prosecution could not provide clear evidence that Am had defrauded the deceased of her assets.

For the case of Police Lieutenant Nui, it is the fourth case out of 15 cases in which "Am" is accused of poisoning someone with cyanide to settle a debt.
