Lion Cub Mahasi Completes Quarantine at Bueng Chawak, Awaits Behavioral Assessment

Suphan buri: “Mahasi”, the lion cub, has been quarantined at Bueng Chawak for seven days. This morning, a team of veterinarians will assess her behavior and readiness before considering releasing her to play in the yard.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, revealed that Dr. Natthanon Panpetch, a veterinarian and head of the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary, reported that “Mahasi,” a 1-year-2-month-old female lion cub, a wildlife animal confiscated and brought to the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Management Development Center in Suphan Buri Province, has completed the required 7-day quarantine period. Her behavior and general health are satisfactory.

The head of the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary also reported that “Mahasi” is getting along well with the care team and has shown no signs of fear. Regarding food, she ate 1 kilogram of beef yesterday and 2 kilograms of chicken breast. She has not eaten the chicken carcass given for dinner yet, totaling 3 kilograms of food.

This morning, we will assess their behavior, including their eating habits and their response to their caregivers, as well as whether they are stressed. If they are found to be ready, we will consider releasing them from their cages and letting them play in the outdoor yard.
