Lively General Meeting Marks Pivotal Moment for Democrat Party Leadership Selection

Bangkok: The atmosphere was lively as Abhisit Vejjajiva arrived at the Democrat Party’s general meeting, where he was greeted warmly following his announcement of returning to the country. His presence has heightened interest in the selection of a new party leader and executive committee.

According to Thai News Agency, the former Democrat Party leader was met with enthusiastic support upon his arrival at the meeting venue, receiving flowers and seeing signs urging him to reclaim his role as party leader. Despite briefly expressing that his “heart has never left,” Abhisit refrained from answering further questions from the media. He proceeded to engage with party members and inquire about the election process, meeting key party leaders such as Chuan Leekpai and Banyat Banthatthan, as well as other former members who have reapplied for party membership, including Korn Chatikavanij, Sakolthee Phattiyakul, and Nipit Intarasombat.

Chuan Leekpai, alongside his son Surabot Leekpai, expressed a desire for Abhisit to return, while noting that the decision rests with the party’s executive committee. He acknowledged the challenge of restoring the party’s confidence and suggested that Abhisit’s return would likely receive wide support. Chuan emphasized Abhisit’s solid political background, distancing him from being a political businessman.

Korn Chatikavanij voiced readiness to engage in beneficial politics for the people, indicating that the new administration could blend old and new generational perspectives due to the rapidly changing world.

In the context of former executives, Chalermchai Sri-on, who had previously resigned prompting a new election, announced his absence from the meeting. However, Decha-ism Khaothong and his son, MP Chaichana Dechacho, were present. The general meeting is actively proceeding with the selection process for the party’s leadership and executive committee.
