Bangkok: Lumpini Park is gearing up for its centennial celebration with significant landscape improvements and the construction of a new Green Bridge set to open on May 1st. Governor Chatchart Sittipunt recently toured the park to assess the progress of these enhancements as Bangkok prepares to commemorate the 100th anniversary of both King Rama VI's passing and the park's establishment.
According to Thai News Agency, the Governor emphasized that Bangkok is expediting renovations in key areas of Lumpini Park to ensure readiness for the April 25th celebrations. Various sectors are collaborating on the project, and the overall progress is nearing completion. Notable renovations include the historic Lumpini Stadium, which has undergone extensive restoration, and the Sala Chalerm Phra Kiat 72nd Anniversary Pavilion, restored with assistance from the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and skilled craftsmen from China.
The iconic clock tower, another significant structure within the park, has also been restored, with the final task being the adjustment of its time to align with the present day. The clock tower, like the park, is a century old and serves as a historical landmark.
In addition to these restorations, the Green Bridge project, which will connect Lumpini Park with Benjakitti Park, is nearing completion. The main structure is finished, with only minor details and landscaping remaining. The bridge is scheduled to open on May 1, 2026, enhancing accessibility by providing a seamless connection between the two parks, covering over 600 rai of green space. This development will allow visitors to enjoy uninterrupted walking paths without the need to navigate the busy sidewalks below.
