Magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Afghanistan kills at least 14 people

Today (7 Oct.) a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan. Recently, at least 14 people have died and dozens more have been injured.

The US Geological Survey reports that At approximately 11:00 AM today local time in Afghanistan. A magnitude 6.3 landfall was made, centered about 40 meters northwest of Herat. Five large aftershocks followed, all measuring 5.5, 4.7, 6.3, 5.9 and 4.6. Ascended approximately the same time within approximately 1 hour.

The quake’s shaking caused panic among villagers, who fled onto the streets. Recently, a Taliban government spokesman said that at least 14 people had been killed and 78 others were injured, but it is expected that the death toll could increase further. Because there were reports of many buildings collapsing. And there are still people stuck under piles of building rubble.

The city of Herat is the capital of Herat Province. It is the largest city in the western region. and is an important cultural city of Afghanistan. According to the World Bank in 2019, Herat has a population of approximately 1.9 million people.
