Kuala lumpur: More than 11,000 people across seven Malaysian states have been impacted by severe floods and heavy rainfall, as reported by Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency on Monday. The agency detailed that as of 6:00 a.m. local time, 11,009 individuals from 3,839 households have experienced flooding in the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Terengganu. The Tumpat district in northeastern Kelantan, near the Thai border, has been identified as the most affected area, with over 8,200 residents impacted. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
According to Thai News Agency, rescue teams are actively working to evacuate residents from flooded homes and have established six temporary shelters in the affected regions. On Sunday, approximately 400 individuals who were stranded in a village in Perlis state due to mudslides caused by continuous rain were successfully evacuated to a mosque located on higher ground, as reported by Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama later that day.
Malaysia’s eastern coast regularly experiences flooding during the rainy season, which spans from October to March, often resulting in thousands of people being displaced each year.
