Nakhon ratchasima: Twelve hours have passed since a 32-year-old man, Mr. Somsak, climbed onto a telecommunications pole on the motorway, allegedly after stealing copper from an M6 assault rifle. The man remains at large, showing signs of weakness due to exposure to changing weather conditions throughout the night and into the morning. Local officials express concern for his well-being as efforts to persuade him to descend continue.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident began yesterday afternoon in Ban Don Wua, Lat Bua Khao Subdistrict, Sikhiu District of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Authorities were alerted when Mr. Somsak ascended the telecommunications tower, fearing arrest and prosecution if he returned to the ground. His actions have caused panic among local residents, and despite overnight persuasion attempts by relatives using a megaphone, he remains on the tower. Officials have stationed an air cushion at the base of the tower as a precautionary measure in case of an emergency.
The superintendent of Sikhiu Police Station, alongside the Hook 31 rescue team, has faced challenges due to the situation. They attempted to coax Mr. Somsak down by placing water and food partway up the pole, yet he has not responded. The narrow area around the pole has complicated rescue efforts, restricting access for large cherry picker trucks. Authorities are now carefully assessing the situation minute by minute, hoping for a safe resolution.
