Maria meets PM, accepts to be tourism ambassaddor

Maria Poonlertlarp, who finished as a top 5 finalist in the Miss Universe 2017 beauty pageant, has accepted Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's invitation to be the country's tourism ambassador.

Ms Maria said this after a meeting with Gen Prayut at Government House on Tuesday (Dec 12).

The Swedish-Thai beauty said she felt it a great honour being given the opportunity to meet the prime minister.

She said the prime minister congratulated her for finishing as one of the top five finalists in the 2017 Miss Universe beauty pageant in the United States. Gen Prayut advised her to maintain the quality of being Thai and do everything honestly in return for her parents.

Ms Maria said she accept the prime minister's invitation for her to be Thailand's tourism ambassador. She said she intends to use her ability to communicate in several languages to promote understanding of Thailand in the international level.

On her meeting with Gen Prayut, Ms Maria said she was excited, adding that the prime minister is a funny person with self-confidence.

Ms Maria said she gave a letter to the prime minister about the problem about the pregnancy of teenage mothers in the hope that she would be able to take part in solving this problem in the future.

She said that, in the letter, she expressed her wish to hold talks with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) over the problem.
