Bangkok: The Maritime Security Command has intensified its security measures, establishing a dedicated working group to assist Thai vessels in navigating the perilous waters affected by Tropical Storm Hormuz. This development follows declarations from Iran and the Houthi rebels asserting control over critical shipping lanes.
According to Thai News Agency, the Center for Monitoring and Managing the Situation in the Middle East (CMAS) has issued an urgent statement in light of the escalating conflict. Iran has announced restrictions on ships linked to certain nations, barring their passage through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Concurrently, Houthi rebels in Yemen have announced their involvement in the conflict, threatening to target the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, both vital to global shipping. Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Panidol Patchimsawat disclosed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has intensified its warnings, extending its targets to include American educational institutions in Gulf countries, and has advised citizens to avoid these areas.
In response to these developments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully negotiated the evacuation of several Thai merchant ships from the high-risk zone. Nonetheless, due to ongoing uncertainties in the Strait of Hormuz, the National Security Council convened on March 27th, resolving to form a "Task Force" dedicated to expediting assistance for the remaining Thai ships, ensuring their secure and orderly exit. Additionally, the council emphasized enhancing communication with the international community to safeguard Thailand's essential shipping routes from further disruptions.
Regarding the evacuation of civilians, the government underscores the urgency for 1,532 Thai citizens located in vulnerable regions to consider immediate departure. The Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv is collaborating with the Thai Embassy in Jordan to arrange the repatriation of citizens via land routes, as Israeli airspace remains inaccessible and special flights are scarce. Concurrently, the Royal Thai Embassy in Muscat is vigilantly monitoring the situation in Oman following an attack on US logistics forces near a pivotal port. Although no injuries to Thai citizens have been reported so far, officials urge everyone to stay informed through official updates.
