MEA-DDPM Outlines Five Key Safety Measures for Electrical Equipment Use

Bangkok: The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), in partnership with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), has issued a set of guidelines aimed at reducing the risk of fire in residential areas due to improper use of electrical equipment. This initiative underscores the critical importance of safe electrical practices in everyday life.

According to Thai News Agency, the MEA and DDPM recommend that consumers prioritize equipment meeting the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TIS) standards to ensure safety and quality. Users are advised to regularly inspect electrical wires, sockets, and plugs, and to cease using any damaged items until they are properly repaired by a qualified technician.

The guidelines also emphasize the installation of a ground wire and a residual current device (RCBO/RCD), particularly for appliances that are exposed to water, such as water heaters and washing machines. This measure is intended to prevent electrical short circuits and mitigate fire risks.

Furthermore, residents are encouraged to unplug devices when not in use, as a precaution against electrical short circuits and potential fires. Thoroughly studying and following the manufacturer’s instructions is also advised to ensure the correct and safe operation of electrical equipment.

Residents in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan can contact the MEA through the MEA Smart Life Application or via Line: MEA Connect (@MEAthailand) for assistance, with the MEA Call Center Online 1130 available around the clock. In case of fires or emergencies, individuals can report incidents via the Safety Hotline 1784 or the “DDPM Report 1784” Line account, using the Line ID @1784DDPM, which offers 24-hour support.
