Meteorological Department Warns of Impending Summer Storms in 40 Thai Provinces

Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning to residents in Thailand as the country continues to experience the effects of summer storms. Authorities have alerted 40 provinces to brace for thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail on May 11-12, with particular emphasis on the northern, central, Bangkok, and the western coast of the southern regions. This adverse weather is attributed to the seasonal transition.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Weather Forecast Division at the Meteorological Department, emphasized the need for vigilance as Thailand navigates through volatile weather conditions. He highlighted that the seasonal change is likely to bring about summer storms characterized by strong winds, thunderstorms, and hail in certain areas.

For May 11, 2025, the risk areas include several provinces in the northern region such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, and Lampang. The central region, including Bangkok, and parts of the eastern region like Chonburi and Rayong, are also expected to be affected. Meanwhile, provinces on the western southern coast like Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan are advised to prepare for severe weather conditions.

On May 12, 2025, the risk extends to provinces in the central region, including Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and Nakhon Sawan, along with Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

The Meteorological Department advises residents in the affected areas to be cautious of short-term flash flooding and to avoid outdoor activities near large trees, unstable structures, or billboards during thunderstorms. The public is encouraged to stay updated through announcements from the Meteorological Department’s website or the weather forecast hotline, available 24/7.
