Bangkok: As the Mid-Autumn Festival nears, consumer spending has shown a marked increase compared to last year, with some offerings for worship experiencing slight price hikes. The Department of Internal Trade has conducted market inspections and noted that while most prices for goods such as pork, chicken, vegetables, and fruits remain stable, there have been minor increases in the prices of certain offerings due to rising costs. Efforts are underway to boost the supply of chicken eggs to meet market demand.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirawut Suwannach, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, reported on a recent inspection at the World Market in Thawi Watthana District, Bangkok. This inspection was conducted ahead of the Chinese Ghost Festival, set for August 27, 2026. Officers were dispatched to monitor various factors, including price labeling, product quantities, and the accuracy of weighing scales, to ensure fair trade practices during this busy shopping period.
The inspection revealed a more vibrant shopping atmosphere than the previous year, with ample goods available to satisfy demand. Prices for most items remained consistent with last year, with reductions seen in some fresh food items. Notably, items such as whole XL ducks, free-range chickens, lean pork, and pork belly were priced within typical ranges. Despite a reported decrease in chicken egg supply, the Department is collaborating with the Egg Producers Association to increase market availability. Meanwhile, many dried food items have seen price reductions, though some, like fresh tofu skin and medium-sized dried squid, have experienced price increases.
To ensure compliance with trade regulations, the Department has verified that most vendors are displaying prices accurately and using standard weighing scales. Consumers are encouraged to report any discrepancies or unfair practices to the Department of Internal Trade hotline or provincial commerce offices. Failure to display prices can result in fines up to 10,000 baht, demonstrating the Department's commitment to maintaining transparency and fairness in the market.
