Bangkok: Deputy Minister of Education clarifies that Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat’s recent trip to the southern provinces did not emphasize ceremonial aspects, and there was no need for formal attire from teachers and students during her visit.
According to Thai News Agency, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Suthep Kaengsanthia, addressed the criticism surrounding Minister Narumon’s choice of attire during her visit to Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani from July 18-20. The minister, dressed in ripped jeans and sneakers, sparked debate on social media for what some perceived as inappropriate attire for a high-ranking education official. Critics argued that her outfit did not align with the general dress standards expected of civil servants.
Mr. Suthep explained that this was Minister Narumon’s first mission in her new role, and there had been no prior discussion regarding dress code expectations for teachers and students attending the activities on public holidays. Many attendees wore formal attire, anticipating the presence of senior officials. However, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narumon stated that visiting during the weekend should not require formal dress codes, allowing participants to wear casual clothing instead of uniforms.
Minister Narumon emphasized the informal nature of her visit, aimed at understanding the real issues faced by educational personnel in the region. She questioned the necessity of students wearing school uniforms for the event and stressed that her visit was intended to be a casual engagement without the burden of formal ceremonies. This approach will serve as a guideline for future practices during similar visits.
