Minister of Justice Unaware of Thaksin’s Pending Cases Affecting Suspended Sentence Eligibility

Bangkok: The Minister of Justice has stated that he is unaware of any pending cases against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, which would affect his eligibility to request a suspended sentence. Thaksin, who was sentenced to one year in prison in a 14th-degree case, must serve at least one-third of his sentence and be imprisoned for at least six months before requesting a suspension.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Ruttaphon Naowarat, the Minister of Justice, elaborated on the conditions regarding Thaksin’s request for a suspension of his sentence. He emphasized that the conditions require Thaksin to serve one-third of his sentence, with a mandatory minimum of six months in prison.

The Minister of Justice was questioned about the possibility of other pending cases affecting Thaksin’s eligibility for a suspended sentence. He admitted that he is currently unaware of such details and reiterated the existing conditions for a suspended sentence.

Additionally, when asked about potential pardons during a special occasion in December, Pol. Lt. Gen. Ruttaphon mentioned that any arrangements for such pardons would be the responsibility of the Department of Corrections.
