Minister of Labour Orders Review of Laws to Protect Platform Workers

Bangkok: A working group has been ordered to review the law, hoping to give platform workers access to social security rights. Julaphan received a letter from a group of riders and ordered the formation of a working group to review laws, hoping to protect platform workers and ensure their access to social security rights.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, Minister of Labour, received a letter from a network of over 30 platform workers. The letter requested amendments to social security laws to ensure equal protection, welfare, and safety for platform workers. Also present were Mr. Pipatchai Paiboon, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour (Political Affairs); Captain Saroj Khomkai, Director-General of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare; Ms. Nanthinee Trapsiri, Efficiency Advisor, Social Security Office; and Mr. Surasit Srikaew, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare. The meeting took place in the lobby of the Ministry of Labour and a subsequent discussion was held in the Labour Relations Committee meeting room on the 1st floor of the Ministry of Labour building.

Mr. Chulaphan stated that he has consistently announced a policy to amend laws to bring platform workers into the social security system. He explained that it needs to be determined whether all types of platform workers are eligible for social security under Section 33. If any group is ineligible, the Ministry of Labour will need to examine how to amend the law to ensure these workers have access to social security protection and benefits. The Ministry of Labour will establish a working group comprising the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, the Social Security Office, and other relevant agencies to discuss this with different types of platform workers and develop appropriate solutions within one year.

Mr. Chulaphan also learned of cases of riders being sexually harassed and physically assaulted while working. He has assigned the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare to handle these matters and expressed his willingness to help resolve these issues to ensure fairness and safety for platform workers. Anyone who encounters such problems can report them or file a complaint directly with the Minister of Labor so that a special task force can intervene and resolve the issues as quickly as possible.
