Minister Urges Meteorological Department to Improve Communication

Bangkok:Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, has called on the Meteorological Department to enhance its communication strategies by using simpler language and ensuring timely warnings to regain public trust, which has shifted towards other social media sources.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaiyanok acknowledged that while the department's communication has improved, further enhancements are necessary to maintain credibility and public trust. He emphasized the need for the department to prove its reliability after the public began relying more on alternative social media sources for timely weather updates.

Mr. Chaiyanok highlighted that the changes followed a policy directive from the Prime Minister aimed at making weather communications more accessible to the public. Although there have been positive reactions to initial improvements, he urged the department to continue refining its communication approach and not just increase the frequency of updates during crises.

Addressing criticisms about delayed information releases, Mr. Chaiyanok stated that the department strives to provide timely updates, even if not entirely accurate, to prevent public anxiety. He confirmed that discussions have been held to address these concerns and emphasized the importance of advance communication to help the public prepare for potential weather events.

Simplifying language in communications, particularly regarding water levels, is part of the department's strategy, but Mr. Chaiyanok noted that guidance on actions in response to weather forecasts falls under the purview of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and related agencies.

To regain trust and ensure the public relies on the Meteorological Department's data, Mr. Chaiyanok stressed the need for the department to demonstrate its capabilities, improve communication strategies, and update its technological infrastructure. He reiterated the importance of consistently applying these enhancements, whether during or outside crisis situations.
