Ministry of Agriculture Launches Campaign to Distribute Surplus Chiang Mai Onions Nationwide

Chiang mai: The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has launched the "We Love You, So We Give You Chiang Mai Onions" campaign, aimed at distributing surplus Chiang Mai onions to end markets across the nation. This initiative involves the deployment of caravans that will distribute onions outside their production areas through cooperative networks, offering market opportunities for farmers.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nares Thamrongtipayakun, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, led the ceremony to launch the onion caravan at Huai Manaw Agricultural Cooperative Limited in the Don Pao Subdistrict of Mae Wang District, Chiang Mai Province. The event was attended by Mr. Nirun Multhida, Director-General of the Department of Cooperative Promotion, along with executives from related agencies and cooperative member farmers.

The Ministry, through the Department of Cooperative Promotion, has collaborated with nationwide cooperative movements to facilitate this distribution effort. The campaign seeks to handle agricultural production comprehensively, ensuring that surplus onions are moved from production areas to end markets.

Mr. Nares highlighted that Chiang Mai is a significant onion-producing region in the country, with cultivation taking place in five districts: Fang, Mae Wang, San Pa Tong, Mae Rim, and Phrao. Projections for the 2025/2026 production year suggest that the supply may surpass local demand.

In response, the Ministry has been actively planning to distribute the surplus onions through a nationwide cooperative network. So far, more than 502 tons of onions have been successfully distributed to 56 provinces.

The recent event also saw the dispatch of 12 additional trucks carrying approximately 50 tons of onions, with a value exceeding 872,450 baht. These onions are being distributed through cooperative networks, government agencies, private sector companies, and modern retail stores.

The campaign aims to distribute at least 2,000 tons of onions outside the production areas, addressing the oversupply issue and enabling farmers to achieve fair and reasonable prices for their produce.
