Bangkok: The Ministry of Commerce has announced the results of the first allocation of import quotas for tea in 2026, totaling over 624 metric tons. This allocation was conducted in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that on February 18, 2026, the Department of International Trade announced the results of the allocation of import quotas for tea products. These quotas are designed to issue certificates demonstrating eligibility for tariff payment within the quota under the Agreement on Agriculture under the WTO for the year 2026, round 1.

The deputy spokesperson explained that this allocation adheres to the Ministry of Commerce's regulations on issuing certificates of entitlement to pay taxes within the tea quota. These regulations stipulate three allocations per year with a total quantity not exceeding 625 metric tons annually. For the first allocation in 2026, the total volume is 624.996289 metric tons, divided into two groups: 437.500000 metric tons for applicants with a history of imports, and 187.496289 metric tons for the general group.

A total of 21 applicants fell into the import history group and 266 into the general group, with the number of applications exceeding the allocated amount. Consequently, the Department of International Trade allocated the funds according to established proportions. The import history group utilized a 36-month historical reference, while the general group was allocated based on the proportion of applications, ensuring fairness and transparency according to the established guidelines.

The deputy spokesperson further noted that the allocation of these quotas is part of Thailand's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations to support the multilateral trading system. This system aims to maintain domestic market stability and facilitate fair trade for businesses.
