Ministry of Commerce Intervenes to Ensure Product Availability Amid Southern Floods

Bangkok: The Ministry of Commerce is actively managing the availability of products in the southern region amid ongoing floods, ensuring there are no shortages or price hikes. The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is closely monitoring the situation and has mandated strict measures to prevent product shortages and prohibit any price increases.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Witthayakorn Maneenet, Director-General of the DIT, detailed the impact of floods across several southern provinces, highlighting damage to farmland and agricultural areas, along with disruptions in product transport. He reported temporary closures of some department stores and shops, raising concerns about short-term product shortages in certain areas.

Mr. Witthayakorn identified the affected areas as Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Trang, Phatthalung, and Pattani provinces. He mentioned that some stores have either closed or cannot provide full service due to flooded entry and exit routes and safety issues. However, some stores continue to operate normally.

The Department of Internal Trade has advised the public to purchase essential consumer goods gradually, discouraging stockpiling. Coordination with manufacturers and distributors is underway to prepare stockpiles and expedite deliveries to flooded areas as soon as possible.

Provincial commercial offices in affected and nearby areas have been instructed to inspect stores carefully, especially those maintaining regular prices. Price tags must be clearly displayed, and any attempts to sell goods at inflated prices or hoard goods will be penalized under the Price of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542.

Mr. Witthayakorn stressed that while some areas might face product disruptions due to transportation challenges, the department is prepared to convene with major manufacturers and traders to strategize the distribution of products and adjust transportation routes as necessary.

The Department of Internal Trade is committed to daily monitoring of the situation and stands ready to implement additional measures if shortages appear imminent, ensuring people have access to goods at fair prices and continuous service.
