Bangkok:The Ministry of Commerce is taking decisive steps to manage the quality and pricing of vegetables during recent floods, working alongside the private sector to ensure markets are well-stocked for the upcoming Vegetarian Festival.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wattanasak Suea-iam, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, highlighted the challenges posed by heavy rainfall and flooding in key agricultural areas across central, western, and northeastern regions. These conditions have led to a reduced supply of vegetables in the market, and even regions not directly affected by flooding have experienced quality issues and crop damage. The transportation of produce has also been disrupted, impacting quality and causing price hikes.
To counteract these issues, the Department of Internal Trade is actively coordinating with major markets, such as Si Mum Muang Market and Talat Thai, to boost vegetable supply. This includes increasing the volume of vegetables in the market to meet public demand, especially critical during the Vegetarian Festival.
Price monitoring at Si Mum Muang Market indicates a recent decline in wholesale prices for several vegetables, including green cabbage and green chili peppers, reflecting improved supply levels. However, prices for some leafy greens, like Chinese water spinach and Thai water spinach, have stabilized, while lemon basil prices continue to rise due to ongoing rainfall affecting production areas.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Ms. Supajee Suthamphan, has directed the Department of Internal Trade and provincial commerce offices to closely monitor and address these challenges. Efforts include ensuring fair pricing, preventing price manipulation, and facilitating smooth transport and distribution of produce to markets.
In preparation for the 2026 Vegetarian Festival, the Department of Internal Trade is organizing the "Thai Helps Thai: A Feast of Merit and Value for Money" event from October 9-18. This initiative aims to offer affordable vegetarian meals and discounts on ingredients, helping reduce public expenses during the festival and ensuring access to a variety of vegetarian food options.
