Ministry of Finance Debunks Fake News on Thai Economy Vulnerability

Bangkok:The Ministry of Finance has confirmed that recent claims about the vulnerability of the Thai economy, attributed to an IMF manager, are fake news.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkapop Pienpises, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, addressed the misinformation that suggested the Thai economy was vulnerable while ASEAN economies are experiencing growth. He clarified that these statements were a misrepresentation of facts.

Mr. Ekkapop referenced the comments made by Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, during the 2026 IMF-WBG Annual Meetings. Ms. Georgieva discussed the global economic situation, highlighting prolonged periods of high interest rates and borrowing costs due to changing global economic fundamentals, such as inflation and AI-driven investment trends. She emphasized that rising borrowing costs in emerging markets are linked to global interest rate increases, not risk spread escalations, and that yield spreads remain stable.

Additionally, Thailand is considered to have significant opportunities to integrate with the regional economy. It stands to benefit from the surge in AI investments and is well-prepared to manage potential risks from these investments, suggesting a positive outlook for the country's economic engagement.
