Bangkok: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its stance on the three ceasefire conditions, emphasizing that these proposals are independent of the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting. According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry is ready to clarify this distinction during the forum, with Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew equipped with comprehensive information on the matter.
At a press briefing held at the Joint Press Center on the Thai-Cambodian situation at the Royal Thai Army Television Station, Deputy Spokesperson Ms. Maratee Nalita Andamo provided insights into the forthcoming Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for December 22nd. She highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in coordinating the meeting details, which will serve as a platform for Thailand to elucidate its stance to ASEAN members, underscoring actions aligned with international law. Ms. Maratee stressed the importance of peace, tied with the security concerns of the Thai populace.
The Ministry’s conditions for a ceasefire with Cambodia were underscored by Ms. Maratee. Thailand insists that Cambodia, identified as the aggressor, must initiate an official ceasefire declaration. Additionally, the Ministry demands a genuine and continuous ceasefire, free of further hostilities, alongside sincere Cambodian cooperation in mine clearance, a pressing issue following an incident involving a Thai soldier.
Ms. Maratee reiterated that these conditions are not linked to the ASEAN meeting but will be addressed if queried by member nations. She noted calls for a ceasefire from countries including the United States, China, and Malaysia, emphasizing Thailand’s position as non-aggressors focused on defending its sovereignty and citizen safety. The duration of the conflict hinges on Cambodia’s response to these conditions, Ms. Maratee remarked.
