Bangkok: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held its annual seminar for Thai consular officers worldwide in 2026, focusing on four strategic policies aimed at enhancing people-centered diplomacy and improving services through technology.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Vichavat Isarabhakdi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Consular Officers Training Seminar at the Centara Grand Central Plaza Ladprao Hotel in Bangkok. The event saw participation from consular officers stationed at Thai embassies, consulates general, and trade and economic offices worldwide. Consular officers from the Middle East participated via online platforms.
During his speech, Mr. Wichawat expressed his support for the officers in the Middle East who were unable to attend in person, acknowledging their hard work. He emphasized the importance placed on consular officers by Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and highlighted the opportunity to discuss their well-being, opinions, and suggestions during the seminar.
The seminar provided a platform for consular officials from all regions to exchange experiences and enhance their knowledge, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to developing strong and modern consular services. The meeting was held in the context of a rapidly changing global environment that impacts the public and the Ministry's operations worldwide, highlighting the urgency and severity of current challenges.
Mr. Wichawat underscored the essential role of consular officials as the country's frontline in protecting and building confidence among Thai citizens abroad, emphasizing the need for proactive measures rather than reactive responses to issues such as conflicts in the Middle East and transnational cybercrime.
He outlined four key policies: People-centered diplomacy to improve the quality of life for Thais worldwide; leveraging artificial intelligence and technology to modernize consular systems and increase transparency; strengthening collaboration networks to enhance protection systems for Thai citizens; and upholding ethical and professional standards to provide responsible and fair services.
Mr. Wichawat reiterated the importance of unity among consular officers as they serve as a vital part of the country's frontline, expressing gratitude for their dedication. He acknowledged that their efforts, though not always visible to the public, hold significant meaning for citizens who have received assistance during challenging times.
Later today, Mr. Sihasak is expected to preside over a policy briefing and deliver a speech emphasizing the development of consular services to meet challenges in a volatile global context, ensuring that Thai diplomacy effectively serves the people and national interests.
The seminar, held from March 24-27, 2026, aimed to inform consular personnel abroad about consular policies and developments and facilitate the exchange of experiences and solutions to challenges in their work. This initiative aligns with the policy of "Diplomacy for the People, We Care for You Everywhere."
