Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has issued six policy directives for the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to expedite infrastructure and technology development, aiming to link logistics and promote sustainable growth in tandem with local communities.
According to Thai News Agency, these directives were introduced during a visit by Mr. Sanpetch Bunyamanee, Deputy Minister of Transport, who was tasked with delivering policy guidelines assigned by Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport. The visit highlighted the need for PAT to focus on infrastructure and technology development, logistics integration, and evolving into a green port that grows alongside local communities. Lieutenant Colonel Rattakorn Khiaopaisan, Deputy Director of PAT for Finance and Corporate Strategy, along with PAT executives and staff, welcomed the Deputy Minister.
Mr. Sanphet Bunyamanee emphasized PAT's pivotal role in the national economy, highlighting the Ministry of Transport's priority to develop a transportation and logistics system that is efficient and environmentally friendly. He outlined six critical operational areas for PAT to focus on, including enhancing port infrastructure to handle increased cargo volumes, seamless integration of the transportation system, and leveraging technology for port management. These initiatives aim to position PAT as an international-level port and a regional waterway transport hub.
In terms of infrastructure, urgent development of Laem Chabang Port Phase 3 and an automated port project at Bangkok Port are prioritized. A feasibility study for developing Ranong Port into a major trade gateway on the Andaman Sea is also planned. Efforts to integrate the transportation system involve accelerating the multimodal system and mode shifting, particularly the project connecting Bangkok Port with the Bangna-At Narong Expressway. PAT is also urged to become a Smart Port through technology upgrades, including a Port Community System and Truck Queue stability improvements.
To address spatial challenges, PAT will use technology to simulate traffic and truck queues, collaborating with various agencies to establish interconnected transportation networks. The directives also emphasize sustainable development, aiming for a Green Port that achieves Net Zero goals while ensuring community involvement. Lastly, PAT is tasked with adapting to global economic fluctuations, developing risk management plans, and enhancing human resources to meet modern global demands.
In addition to these directives, the Port Authority of Thailand presented progress reports on key projects and addressed issues such as traffic congestion and business impacts from the Middle East conflict. Mr. Sanphet Bunyamanee reiterated the mission's importance in enhancing Thailand's global trade competitiveness, emphasizing technology and innovation to resolve transportation issues and support economic growth without resorting to establishing a casino.
The Acting Director of PAT affirmed the adoption and implementation of the Ministry's policies to ensure efficient operations and services that align with user needs and global economic trends, committing to balanced and sustainable port development.
