Ministry of Transport Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Drug Use Among Public Transport Drivers

Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has launched a comprehensive crackdown to enforce a 100% drug-free policy among public transport drivers, threatening immediate penalties including license revocation for violators.

According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Transport has tasked the Department of Land Transport with implementing stringent inspections to ensure drivers' compliance. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, along with Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, have mandated rigorous checks to monitor drivers' readiness and driving behavior to safeguard public transport users.

Mr. Thitipat Thaijongrak, Director of the Automotive Engineering Bureau and spokesperson for the Department of Land Transport (DLT), stated that guidelines and safety inspection measures are in place for both vehicles and drivers, emphasizing a 100% drug-free status. The DLT has instructed bus operators to ensure their drivers' physical condition and vehicle readiness. Transport Safety Managers are tasked with planning ongoing driver assessments, while inspectors will conduct random drug tests nationwide, starting in Bangkok, in cooperation with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board and the Ministry of Public Health. If drugs are detected, drivers will undergo medical confirmation and face legal proceedings. The Department of Land Transport will revoke driving licenses of those found guilty.

Furthermore, transport operators neglecting their duties face penalties under Section 40 bis of the Land Transport Act B.E. 2522 (1979), which includes imprisonment, fines, and potential revocation of their licenses. Mr. Thitipat emphasized that the Department of Land Transport has compiled a database of vehicle operators to screen for drug involvement or reckless driving history. This initiative aligns with the Ministry's policy to implement stringent measures to restore public confidence and prevent negligence-related incidents.
