Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has directed the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) to expedite the implementation of electric train projects in a bid to reduce travel costs. Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn emphasized the importance of upgrading transportation infrastructure to not only reduce expenses but also ensure the highest safety standards for the public.
According to Thai News Agency, during a visit to the MRTA, Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister, delivered policy directives that align with government policy to accelerate the development of a comprehensive transportation system. He highlighted the need for a modern, efficient transit network that connects all national transport systems, aiming to provide a safe, standardized, and environmentally friendly transportation system accessible to all societal levels.
The MRTA has been tasked with several key operations. Firstly, improving the quality of life and reducing living costs by managing the Bangkok Metropolitan Rail service efficiently. This includes expanding the 40-baht flat-rate fare policy and promoting a zone-based fare concept. Additionally, MRTA is urged to negotiate with private concessionaires to implement a single ownership policy for rail project management. The enactment of the Integrated Ticketing System Act B.E. 2568 (2025) is also prioritized to facilitate seamless travel and reduce expenses.
The MRTA is also instructed to expedite construction and service operations of railway projects, with a particular focus on the Purple Line and Orange Line extensions. Safety standards during construction and operation are to be strictly enforced, with an emphasis on meeting international standards to build public trust.
Furthermore, the MRTA is expected to lay the foundation for sustainable future infrastructure. This includes developing a feeder system that connects road, rail, and water transport, as well as accelerating regional mass transit projects. The feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of these projects will be carefully considered.
MRTA Governor Kajorn Udomthampakdee confirmed the readiness to implement these policies, focusing on reducing travel costs while upgrading service quality and maintaining high safety standards. The MRTA is conducting feasibility studies on a Single Ownership model for electric train operations and is closely monitoring fare zone division policies. Updates and further information can be found on the MRTA website and social media platforms.
