Money Trail in Nakhon Sawan Temple Scandal Unveiled: Link Between Temple Boy and Layperson Sparks Investigation

Nakhon sawan: Deputy Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau has uncovered a money trail involving a temple boy from Nakhon Sawan and a layperson, leading to the disrobing of two women connected to the case. The investigation is also probing allegations of corruption related to the construction of the Buddha Park and the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) in Nakhon Sawan.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Col. Charoonkiat Pankaew, the deputy commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, has revealed that the investigation is focused on the complaint against ‘Tid Srit’ or former Phra Thammachirathirakun, the abbot of Wat Nakhon Sawan. The investigation aims to punish monks involved in inappropriate behavior. The probe has expanded to include potential criminal corruption, with efforts underway to gather evidence in Nakhon Sawan and Phichit Provinces. Although the monks have disrobed, the police continue to investigate possible charges of criminal corruption linked to various financial transactions.

In a related matter, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat disclosed that a complaint was lodged with the Anti-Corruption Division concerning the ongoing construction at Buddha Park and a project at MCU Nakhon Sawan. Despite being under construction for years, the projects remain incomplete, with significant funds raised but unaccounted for. Concerns have been raised regarding the use of temple funds and donations, prompting further scrutiny by authorities.

Questions have arisen regarding the involvement of female laypeople in the disrobing of the abbot. Pol. Col. Charoonkiat acknowledged that leaked information from various agencies might have contributed to the incident. While evidence of unusual relationships between female laypeople and the abbot has surfaced, the police are investigating the origins of significant assets held by these individuals. The inquiry seeks to determine if temple funds or personal accounts were utilized for these transactions.

Pol. Lt. Col. Charoonkiat highlighted that the investigation revealed a money trail potentially linked to purchases of land, luxury items, and other assets. The police are still gathering comprehensive information and have noted that a temple junior monk’s financial activities warrant further questioning. Although no temple accounts have been implicated in the money transfers, authorities emphasize the importance of addressing criminal corruption cases promptly.

The investigation has identified two women with evidence of money transfers, prompting a deeper examination of the source of these funds. If temple money is found to be involved, it will be classified as corruption. The police are prepared to track down and prosecute any individuals involved in criminal activity. Regarding the former abbot, who has disrobed, it is seen as an acknowledgment of his actions, and he will face any criminal charges that may arise from the investigation.

Pol. Col. Charoonkiat reassured that the Royal Thai Police are committed to pursuing justice in this case, emphasizing that no one is exempt from the law. Over 200 complaints have been filed, with some investigations completed and others ongoing. The authorities are determined to address and resolve the issues related to misconduct among monks.
