Buriram: The monastic order in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, is reeling after police and military forces arrested a monk involved in methamphetamine trafficking. The abbot confessed to using donations from religious ceremonies to instruct other monks to purchase drugs.
According to Thai News Agency, the Buriram Narcotics Suppression Police, in collaboration with Border Patrol Police, military personnel, and local administrative officials, apprehended a Buddhist monk in a dramatic operation. The arrest took place after officers inspected a suspicious black sedan, following intelligence that a drug delivery was to occur between Khu Muang and Phutthaisong districts. The vehicle was tracked for over 40 kilometers before it was stopped at a red light in Chum Het subdistrict, Mueang Buriram district. Inside, officers found Phra Tang, 31, and Phra Phiew, 22, with 181 methamphetamine pills concealed in the car and their robes.
Further investigation into Phra Tang's mobile phone revealed evidence linking him to another monk in Phutthaisong district. This led authorities to a temple in Ban Pao subdistrict, where they discovered Phra Plai, 27, who admitted to facilitating a drug sale and consuming some of the methamphetamine.
The investigation extended to a forest temple in Pangku Subdistrict, where Phra Pipat, the 32-year-old abbot, was questioned. Despite initial denials, he confessed to using methamphetamine and orchestrating drug purchases through another monk. The temple, now with only one elderly monk remaining, has canceled its annual Dharma outreach program due to the scandal.
The local community is in shock, with parishioners expressing sadness over the incident. Mrs. U, a 63-year-old resident, tearfully shared her disbelief and willingness to forgive the monks if they repent, though she acknowledged the significant impact on the community's faith.
Meanwhile, police have expanded their investigation, leading to the arrest of three more individuals connected to the drug trafficking ring. A total of 49,223 methamphetamine pills have been seized, along with one car and a motorcycle.
In a related incident in Surin Province, authorities conducted drug tests on monks in Sikhoraphum District, resulting in the defrocking of two monks, including an abbot, who tested positive for drugs. They have been sent for rehabilitation.
