Bangkok: Monporn is collaborating with the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand to develop a campaign network aimed at promoting safe rocket lighting practices during the annual Rocket Festival in 2025. The initiative seeks to continue the cherished tradition of the festival while ensuring the safety of airspace.
According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Manop Jareonsri, Deputy Minister of Transport, emphasized the significance of the Rocket Festival, which is scheduled for May – June 2025. The festival, celebrated across several provinces in the Northeastern region, not only preserves local wisdom and tradition but also boosts the local economy and tourism. Mrs. Jareonsri has instructed Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. (AEROTHAI) to spearhead a campaign focused on educating the public on “How to light rockets safely for flying.” This involves coordinating with provinces to disseminate information to government bodies, private entities, and the general public. The campaign underscores the importance of seeking permission before launching rockets, adhering to guidelines from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) or provincial announcements. Collaborations with local administrative agencies are crucial to ensure airports can circulate a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), which aids in flight planning and operations,
thus guaranteeing flight safety.
Mr. Surachai Nooprom, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Director-General of AEROTHAI, shared insights from 2024 statistics, noting 1,747 rocket launch notifications. The provinces with the highest reports of rocket launches included Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Yasothon, Roi Et, and Ubon Ratchathani. These permissions are vital for effective aviation management. Despite efforts, pilots have reported seeing rockets at altitudes of 16,000-23,000 feet, which coincide with passenger aircraft flight levels. AEROTHAI continues to educate the public on the aviation impacts and seeks support from both public and private sectors to advocate for pre-launch permissions. This collaborative approach aims to enhance Thai airspace safety while preserving community traditions sustainably.
