Rubaya: More than 200 people have died in a mine collapse in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the death toll expected to rise. The incident occurred at the Coltan mine in Rubaya, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to Thai News Agency, the collapse was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, which weakened the mine's structure, trapping miners under the debris. The Rubaya mine is a crucial source of coltan, a mineral essential for the production of electronic devices such as smartphones.
The area has been under the control of the AFC/M23 rebel group since mid-2024, complicating rescue and investigation efforts by the central government. Many remain missing and trapped under the rubble, suggesting the death toll could increase further.
