Myanmar Authorities Incinerate $600 Million in Confiscated Drugs

Yangon: Myanmar authorities destroyed confiscated drugs worth more than US$600 million (approximately 22 billion baht) today in observance of the United Nations' International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The incineration of these drugs marks a significant effort by the government to combat drug trafficking within the country.

According to Thai News Agency, the drugs destroyed weighed more than 50 tons and included heroin, methamphetamine, crystal meth, ketamine, opium, and marijuana. The total value of these seized drugs exceeded US$600 million, reflecting a substantial increase in asset and drug seizures compared to last year. Ceremonies were held at multiple locations across the country, with the largest taking place on the outskirts of Yangon, where drugs worth approximately US$321 million were destroyed. Other notable locations included Mandalay and Taunggyi in Shan State, near major drug production centers.

Experts indicate that Myanmar remains one of the world's largest producers of heroin and synthetic drugs, particularly methamphetamine, which are distributed throughout East and Southeast Asia. Since the 2021 coup and the military government's seizure of power, political unrest and civil conflicts have exacerbated the drug production and trafficking issues. The Myanmar military government has accused various armed groups of using drug revenue to fund their activities and avoiding peace processes to maintain their profits.

Meanwhile, some ethnic groups previously involved in the drug trade are actively working to combat drug trafficking in their territories. The Lahu National Liberation Army/Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) recently announced the destruction of $5.5 million worth of drugs within its control, showcasing a commitment to tackling this pervasive issue.
