Nakhon ratchasima: Residents in Nakhon Ratchasima have urged the parliament to reconsider the proposed relocation of the World Horticultural Expo from Khong District to Pak Chong District. They emphasize that the decision should not be based solely on economic factors.

According to Thai News Agency, the appeal was made during a gathering at the press conference room on the 1st floor of the Parliament building. Mr. Noppol Lueangthongna, Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Cooperatives, alongside his committee, received a formal letter from Mr. Thawil Rattanaporn, Deputy Mayor of Non Daeng Subdistrict Municipality. The letter expressed objections to the proposed venue change of the World Horticultural Expo from Khong District to Pak Chong District.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has reportedly suggested that hosting the expo in Khong District may not be financially viable, prompting consideration of Pak Chong District as an alternative. In response, local representatives have requested a delay in submitting the proposal to the Cabinet to allow for a comprehensive review of the decision's rationale.

The proposed relocation has significant implications for residents in eight districts, who anticipated that the expo would boost the local economy and aid in the development of surrounding areas in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Consequently, they seek clarity from relevant authorities on the evaluative criteria that deemed the Khong District site as cost-inefficient and the rationale for preferring Pak Chong District.

Mr. Noppol expressed his recent awareness of the venue change and acknowledged the potential disappointment among residents. The expectation was that the expo would promote economic and developmental growth in the less developed border districts adjacent to Chaiyaphum province.

He highlighted that venue selection should encompass more than just economic returns, considering social factors, equitable opportunity distribution, and balanced regional development. Such considerations are crucial when deploying large-scale projects aimed at economic stimulation and quality of life improvement for underserved communities.

The committee intends to review the situation and forward findings to the relevant agencies, ensuring a thorough examination of the information and reasons behind the proposed venue change before any submission to the Cabinet.
