Bangkok: "Ploytalee" has clarified that the proposed amendments to the nationality law will not permit foreigners to run for election. Ms. Ploytale Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized that these changes are intended to address long-standing personal status issues rather than altering political rights outlined in the Constitution and related laws.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytale responded to a Facebook post by "Phuket Times," which sparked concern among Thai citizens by suggesting that the nationality law amendments would allow newly naturalized foreigners to participate in local politics in Phuket. She clarified that the amendments are not designed to grant Thai citizenship to foreign workers or illegal immigrants but to address the status of long-term residents with verified identities who have completed legal verification processes.
Ms. Ploytale reiterated that even after acquiring Thai citizenship, individuals must adhere to constitutional and legal requirements to hold political or high-ranking government positions. The Ministry of Interior is currently gathering public feedback on the draft amendments through the "Project for Gathering Public Opinions on Amendments to the Nationality Act B.E. 2508," overseen by the Department of Provincial Administration.
The government is encouraging public participation in the consultation process before the draft law advances further. Ms. Ploytale assured that the proposed amendments would undergo multiple stages of public and parliamentary review. She emphasized that political rights and election eligibility will continue to be governed by the Constitution and other specific laws, alleviating public concerns about potential changes to these rights.
