Bangkok: Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, has called on the Ministry of Interior to transfer zoning authority to local authorities, citing a legal loophole that led to a tragic brewery fire. Following a recent shadow cabinet meeting, the People's Party issued a statement in which Mr. Nattapong expressed his condolences for the fire at the Lat Phrao brewery and called for changes in zoning laws for entertainment venues.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong conveyed his sympathies to the families of the 30 individuals who lost their lives and those affected by the fire in Soi Ladprao 1 on June 27th. He highlighted that such incidents are not uncommon in Thailand, attributing them to loopholes in law enforcement and the officials responsible for overseeing these laws.
The People's Party has proposed amending the current law, which assigns the zoning authority to the Minister of Interior, suggesting that local authorities, such as the Bangkok Governor, should have this power. This change could facilitate closer and more effective zoning and oversight of entertainment venues.
The current legal framework may allow business owners to bypass strict safety regulations by applying for alternative permits, such as restaurant licenses that enable the sale of alcoholic beverages. This creates vulnerabilities that can lead to tragedies like the Lat Phrao brewery fire. The People's Party is committed to monitoring the amendment of related laws and ensuring rigorous oversight of trade and entertainment venues in the area.
