Bangkok: Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, the leader of the opposition in Thailand’s House of Representatives, has highlighted the commencement of a critical four-month period leading to the dissolution of Parliament. As the government embarks on this countdown, Natthaphong emphasized the need for a new, fully democratic constitution, vowing to ensure rigorous checks and balances during this period.
According to Thai News Agency, Natthaphong made these remarks during a joint meeting of Parliament, which was convened for the government policy statement under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, the Speaker of the National Assembly. Natthaphong, representing the Prachachon Party, opened the government policy debate, marking a significant milestone for both the government and the opposition as they prepare for the upcoming constitutional referendum.
Natthaphong called upon the assembly to reflect on Thailand’s political history, marked by numerous coups, and stressed the necessity of drafting a new constitution. He questioned whether any generation of Thais had experienced a stable democratic system and urged the need for political reform to prevent further coups and ensure economic growth driven by domestic politics.
The opposition leader criticized the current political landscape, noting the inefficacy of existing oversight mechanisms which are often used as political tools rather than for protecting taxpayers’ money. He pointed out the severe corruption issues and the need for a transparent and effective government, legitimized by the people’s will.
Natthaphong outlined a plan for the next four months, including pushing for constitutional amendments, advancing beneficial legislation, and addressing immediate economic and quality of life issues. He reiterated his commitment to checks and balances, ensuring the government does not abuse its power or interfere with legal proceedings.
He concluded by urging respect for the justice system and the people’s power, emphasizing the importance of a democratic future free from coups and revolutions. His vision includes a government that undertakes structural reforms, invests in future industries, and protects all tax dollars through an independent system of checks and balances, ultimately leading to a new, forward-moving Thailand.
