Bangkok: Natthapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, has endorsed the Kla Tham Party's move to join the opposition, emphasizing the importance of thoroughly examining the government's actions. He has also called on the Election Commission to disclose the names of Metropolitan Waterworks Authority officials involved in addressing the barcode issue.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Natthapong addressed the pressure on the Kla Tham Party to take a stand in opposition, highlighting that differing opinions on issues are permissible among opposition parties. He stressed that their primary role is to rigorously scrutinize government operations through parliamentary mechanisms.
In reference to the Election Commission's summoning of election officials for questioning over the photographing of ballot papers with barcodes, Mr. Natthapong stated that such investigations are acceptable if conducted within regulatory frameworks. However, he warned against using power to intimidate or silence those fulfilling their duties with integrity. He clarified that photographing ballots prior to voting is not illegal and urged the Election Commission to explain that barcodes do not compromise the principle of secret ballot voting.
He further urged the Election Commission to release the list of election officials nationwide to ensure transparency, noting that such information is not confidential and has been disclosed previously. This, he argued, would help dispel public doubts. While the court holds the authority to decide if an election should be annulled, he emphasized the need for the Election Commission to swiftly provide clarity and safeguard citizens' rights.
