Bangkok: The NBTC board meeting was abruptly abandoned as it failed to meet the quorum requirements following a walkout by three commissioners concerned about the qualifications of Dr. Soran Boonbaichaiyapruk, the NBTC Chairman, and its effect on the digital television agenda. A new meeting has been scheduled for August 5th.

According to Thai News Agency, the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) staff had gathered outside the meeting room at the NBTC office to show support for Dr. Soran, presenting flowers and awaiting his arrival amid uncertainty about his participation. This tension stemmed from the NBTC Selection Committee's previous decision, which questioned Dr. Soran's qualifications, suggesting he was not suited for his role.

Dr. Soran arrived at 9:30 AM, sparking immediate debate among the committee members over his ongoing status. The selection committee had previously indicated that Dr. Soran relinquished his position, a decision acknowledged by all committee members. Concerns were raised that his participation could unduly influence critical votes on other agenda items.

Before the meeting, several committee members, including Prof. Dr. Pirongrong Ramsoot, Air Vice Marshal Dr. Thanapan Hraicharoen, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supach Supachalasai, who had earlier requested leave, arrived but later exited the meeting. Associate Professor Dr. Sompop Phurivikraipong also informed the authorities of his absence.

With only three members present, including Dr. Sarana, the meeting failed to proceed due to the lack of quorum and was rescheduled for August 5th. Air Vice Marshal Dr. Thanapan later clarified that the walkout was not a formal protest but an attempt to address the issue before the meeting, which was not approved by the chairman. He noted that compliance by Dr. Soran with the selection committee's decision might have prevented the situation.

Dr. Soran announced his intention to contest the selection committee's decision legally, arguing that they lacked the authority to finalize the decision. He confirmed his attendance for the next meeting, stressing the importance of all members fulfilling their responsibilities due to the significant implications of the agenda items.
