Bangkok: The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) explained that restricting frequency bands is an ongoing effort to address the scammer problem, emphasizing it is a national agenda.
According to Thai News Agency, at 10:00 AM on December 17, 2025, during a joint press conference on the Thai-Cambodian situation at the Royal Thai Army Television Station, Mr. Trairat Wiriyasirikul, Deputy Secretary-General and Acting Secretary-General of the NBTC, discussed the measures being taken to combat transnational scammers. He highlighted the continuous efforts to limit signal towers in areas susceptible to scams. Although radio frequencies are more challenging to control compared to utilities like water and electricity, and given the irregularity of Thailand’s borders with neighboring countries, they have been able to detect and mitigate issues where signals have inadvertently crossed borders. While this has led to temporary signal loss in some Thai regions, the NBTC has resolved these issues to ensure minimal public disruption. In areas identified as scam hotspots, the signal will be entirely cut off.
The NBTC emphasized the dynamic nature of scammer networks, which constantly change locations, necessitating ongoing monitoring. Addressing this challenge has been declared a national priority. The issue of managing radio frequencies is also bound by international agreements, with efforts focused on minimizing interference to levels even lower than those required by neighboring countries. These measures have been communicated to neighboring nations as essential steps in the comprehensive approach to tackle the scammer menace.
