Bangkok: New businesses continue to grow in September, with 8,156 establishments and the lowest closure rate in two years. The Department of Business Development revealed an overall picture of Thai businesses in the third quarter of 2025, with new business registrations continuing to increase, while the number of business closures fell to a two-year low, reflecting a positive trend in the Thai economy.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, Director-General of the Department of Business Development, stated that in September 2018, 8,156 new businesses were established, marking an increase of 515 or 6.74% from August and an increase of 289 or 3.67% from September 2014. Despite this growth, the registered capital was 19.867 billion baht, showing a decrease of 3.322 billion baht or 14.32% from the previous month and a decrease of 2.181 billion baht or 9.89% from the previous year.
For the third quarter of 2025, a total of 23,507 new businesses were established, an increase of 3,492 or 17.45% from the previous quarter and an increase of 204 or 0.88% from the same quarter in 2024. The total registered capital for these businesses was 65.074 billion baht, which represented a decrease of 4.146 billion baht or 5.99% from the prior quarter but an increase of 1.671 billion baht or 2.64% from the same quarter last year. Over the first nine months of 2025, 67,345 new businesses were established, a decrease of 2,341 or 3.36% from the same period last year. However, the total registered capital increased to 214.214 billion baht, a rise of 5.733 billion baht or 2.75%.
In September 2025, there were 2,150 business closure registrations, an increase of 490 or 29.52% from August and a decrease of 104 or 4.61% from September 2024. The registered capital for closures was 5,556 million baht, a decrease of 6,777 million baht or 54.95% from the previous month and a decrease of 11,056 million baht or 66.55% from the same period last year.
During the third quarter, a total of 5,635 businesses closed, an increase of 2,498 businesses or 79.63% from the second quarter, but a decrease of 572 businesses or 9.22% from the third quarter of 2024. The registered capital closed was 38,046 million baht, an increase of 104% from the previous quarter, but a decrease of 1,211 million baht or 3.08% from the same quarter of the previous year.
Over the first nine months of 2025, there were 11,879 business closures, a decrease of 367 cases or 3% from the same period of the previous year. The total registered capital closed was 68,590 million baht, a decrease of 47,415 million baht or 40.87% from the previous year. On average, the ratio of new establishments to business closures was 6 to 1, which is consistent with the average level over the past five years.
As of September 30, 2025, Thailand had a total of 2,032,174 registered juristic persons with a total registered capital of 31.28 trillion baht. Of this number, 976,857 juristic persons are still operating, accounting for 48%. This includes 774,201 limited companies with registered capital of 17.17 trillion baht, 201,156 limited partnerships and juristic general partnerships with capital of 0.44 trillion baht, and 1,500 public limited companies with capital of 5.33 trillion baht.
The business group with the most registrations is the service sector with 530,171 registered businesses and registered capital of 13.28 trillion baht, accounting for 54.27% of the total. This is followed by the wholesale/retail sector with 319,843 registered businesses and registered capital of 2.61 trillion baht (32.74%), and the manufacturing sector with 126,843 registered businesses and registered capital of 7.05 trillion baht (12.99%).
