Nine Dead After Pickup Truck Plunges into Ditch in Nan Province

Huai yen: Nine people died after a pickup truck veered off the road, crashed into a barrier, and went into a ditch. A tragic accident occurred in Huai Yen district, Nan province, when a pickup truck carrying 22 villagers lost control on a curve, crashing into a guardrail before overturning and falling off the road. The cause is believed to be brake failure while descending a steep hill.

According to Thai News Agency, the accident occurred yesterday evening on the side of Highway 1256, Pua - Doi Phu Kha National Park - Bo Kluea section, at kilometer 8+700, Huai Yen curve, in the area between Ban Na Lae and Ban Mon, Woranakorn Subdistrict, Pua District, Nan Province. Following the accident, investigators from Pua Police Station found a gray pickup truck with Phitsanulok license plates that had veered off the road and overturned. Several passengers were ejected from the vehicle. Initially, five people were found dead at the scene, three died while being transported to Somdej Phra Yuparat Pua Hospital, and one more died while receiving treatment, bringing the total death toll to nine. Among the deceased were four schoolchildren. Six other people sustained serious injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that the pickup truck, driven by Mr. Ichaleet, 47, was carrying 22 villagers from Ban Jun, Moo 4, Pa Klang Subdistrict, Pua District, all relatives, on their way back from fishing in Bo Kluea District. While returning in the evening, upon reaching a steep, downhill curve, the brakes failed, causing the vehicle to crash into the guardrail and overturn, falling off the road. Authorities suspect the cause may have been brake failure combined with the steep, dangerous curve of the road. A detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the true cause of the accident.

This incident is considered a mass accident that has caused severe loss to the community, as three students from Saharat Bamrung School (grades 4, 5, and 6) and one student from Mathayom Pa Klang School (grade 4) died. The administrators and teachers from both schools have posted messages expressing their condolences to the families and mourning the loss of the students. Furthermore, relevant agencies will expedite assistance to the injured and provide close support and support to the families of the deceased.
