“No Kings” Movement Gains Momentum as US Protests Surpass 10 Million Amidst Rising Tensions

Kuala lumpur: The "No Kings" movement has erupted across the United States, with protests surpassing 10 million participants, as war and rising costs of living add fuel to the fire. Donald Trump finds himself under mounting pressure from all sides.

According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Praphee Apichatsakol, a lecturer in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Law, Srinakharinwirot University, and Vice President of the American Studies Association in Thailand, revealed on the Good Morning ASEAN program on MCOT News FM 100.5 that the 'No Kings' protests have expanded for the third time. The increase in participants, reaching 9-10 million people nationwide, underscores a growing level of public dissatisfaction. Initial concerns were tied to the high cost of living and strict immigration policies, but the situation has escalated with the US's continued involvement in the war with Iran.

The prolonged conflict has increased economic risks and amplified pressure on the government. Rising energy and oil prices are a significant concern, affecting consumer goods and travel costs. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz further exacerbates economic challenges, impacting Trump's voter base as midterm elections approach. While protests remain peaceful, their spread to multiple states, including Trump's traditional strongholds, indicates widespread discontent across various demographics.

American society remains divided, with Trump supporters accusing Democrats of backing the protests and questioning media coverage. Meanwhile, some Iranian groups in the US express support for Trump. The role of ICE, with its strict immigration policies and controversial enforcement methods, has also fueled opposition and fear among both undocumented and legal residents.

The government's perspective downplays the protests as emotional outpourings from dissenters, suggesting that the reported numbers are exaggerated. Trump, however, has indicated negotiations with Iran might be possible, despite Iran's continued rejection. His upcoming prime-time statement is anticipated to clarify US policy on the Iran conflict.

Associate Professor Dr. Prapir warns that unresolved issues, including economic problems and domestic discontent, could erode Trump's support. However, a resolution to the war might help restore confidence. The coming period is a critical political turning point for the US leader.
