Officials Trace Tourists Over Illegal Parrotfish Hunting in Phuket

Phuket: Authorities are searching for a group of foreign tourists caught on video spearfishing parrotfish and mishandling starfish at a popular beach in Phuket, sparking outrage on social media and a swift legal response.

According to Thai News Agency, officials from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) launched an investigation on Monday evening after viral footage showed the group hunting the protected species off the southern end of Kata Beach. Witness reports and local business owners indicated that the incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on May 9, 2026. The suspects, identified as a group of Chinese tourists, were diving and spearing fish among the rocks. In addition to hunting the parrotfish, the group reportedly pulled starfish from the water to use as props for photographs. A local shop owner mentioned that they attempted to warn the tourists about the illegality of their actions, but the group ignored the warnings and continued.

Parrotfish play a crucial role in maintaining the health of coral reefs by consuming algae that can otherwise smother coral ecosystems. Under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's 2024 regulations for environmental protection zones in Phuket, catching or possessing these fish is strictly prohibited. Violators of these laws face severe penalties, including up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht ($3,000), or both.

In response to the incident, the Karon Municipality has pledged to install prominent educational signage along the beachfront to inform visitors of local environmental laws. Municipal officers will also increase patrols in the area to deter future violations. Authorities are currently reviewing the social media footage and witness statements to identify the individuals involved and proceed with legal action.
